In anticipation of the arrival of our second CEO, I added the phrase "having cooked" as well. Hope you don't mind. Razz

got "curry leaves chutney" made today. it tasted same as the one i had had in hotal nagarjuna, bangalore. however it tasted a tad bitter (the one in nagarjuna had no bitterness) and just as i had feared. i do not know how to cut back on the bitterness. anyway, it tasted great!

What else goes into this curry leaves chutney? I was once given a "curry leaves powder" by a relative - it had to be mixed with rice and eaten.

it's a long journey from home to office. i have to take the elevator shuttle four floors down. normally i read the newspaper during my commute. and an equally harrowing commute back home.

p.s. building has wi-fi

the recipe was my wife's. roast cumin, mustard seeds, garlic, ginger, neem leaves (sweet neem), chana dal and curry leaves. add tamarind water. put in processor.

now i feel we have to add coriander leaves to this too. maybe that will cut back on the bitterness. btw, this chutney goes well with almost anything -- rice, rotis etc. in nagarjuna this chutney was on the house! and it was the second most tasty dish there (after the hyderabadi biryani).

blabberwock, i saw you in my dreams last night. strange i know. stranger that i remember it. let me recall.

i had visited your house. you stayed in a apartment on the third floor. you waved at me as i approached your house from your verandah. i waved back. i had luggage (two suitcases). someone carried my suitcases up upon your instruction. i went up, rang the doorbell. i stayed in the guest room overnight. there were other guests too in your house. i met your husband too. some get together was going on in your house. from your house's terrace, i could see a beautiful lake and mountains across. i jumped from the terrace into the lake. i swam across and joined a party that was touring the hills on the other side. my dream narrative left you at that point and continued in another direction. i think during the tour of the hills, we ran into an egyptian pharoess type presiding over a gathering. after that i don't remember.

in fact i can clearly remember what you looked like. spooky.

Why me? What did I look like anyway?

- I am not on the third floor
- I do have a nice verandah (patio?)
- Guests rarely visit us and never in a bunch anyway
- I do have a fantastic view from my house (ocean and hills and little islands) but will not recommend jumping into the ocean from the terrace.

you looked fair (and lovely...) with rounded features (cheeks i could pinch...). not making this up. i suppose my mind revealed to me what, deep in my subconscious, i thought you looked like. i have to thank my subconscious for sharing this little secret with me.

Why, you really want The Brother to join this forum, don't you? I have shared my family pictures with a few here (= old Sulekha CH) a long time go. I was young and innocent then but am old and wise now.

On a clear day, there is nothing more uplifting than waking up early, sip my cup of kaapi and watch the sunrise. Some days, the nature puts up a spectacular show with incredible colours. An impending thunder storm is also quite a sight, low hanging dark clouds and an angry sea.

Anyway, let's get back to food. I am making (*ahem* getting made) some grilled aubergine/mushrooms marinated in a coriander/cumin/chilli/garlic/etc. sauce with with freshly made peanut (satay) sauce on the side. If and when I figure out how to load pictures here, I will post them.

sounds yummyyy. since my phone is hooked to wi-fi and i got fast gmail on it, i simply click and mail myself the pics from my 8 mega pixel phone. and then upload directly here. a whole lot easier than before -- wires to upload to pc and then tinypics.com to host the pics.

bitter because of neem leaves maybe. i am not sure about neem leaves in curry leaf powder or chutney.
another ingredient that is missing is dry red chilies. swap tamarind water with some tamarind of the solid kind. relay these instructions to your cook and let us know if you see an improvement in taste.

tried this today. the bitterness was gone. we also roasted the curry leaves a bit more (besides add red chillies and tamarind pulp). there were no neem leaves used earlier. that was my mistake. curry leaves are also called sweet neem in hindi -- i had not known that. the recipe my wife had used was a sanjeev kapoor recipe.

bought a huge bunch of broccoli rabe. i always get excited when i find greens that i haven't seen before and explore ways to incorporate them into our diet. it's got an unusual taste raw -- mild at first, bitter in the middle and then a wasabi like eye watering spiciness at the end. i made the mistake of eating a whole leaf raw and was hopping towards the end. now looking for recipes to turn it into something edible.

There are some exotic varieties, like spring dosa (lots of vegetables). Believe it or not, I had mysore masala dosa for the first time today and asked for a 2nd one too.

This dosa deal normally supplements other food, usually a buffet. Catching on among indians in the bay area. I am sure it is popular in other areas where there is a heavy indian concentration (altho, southall may have an aloo gobi party scene instead:)

Razz followed by a customary pilgrimage to the glassy junction. (there's a gurdwara next to it too i think -- so a pilgrimage it is.)

Need to check out this Glassy Junction next time. I went to Southall on my first trip to London many years ago, just out of curiosity and was there barely for a couple of hours. Had a Pakistani friend in Ealing, but lost touch a long time ago.
